Come celebrate America’s 250th birthday as you walk back in time to observe, and possibly sample, historical cast iron cooking from our nation’s past. State park educators from North Central and Western PA will be dressed in period clothing preparing period dishes that relate back to their park from our nation’s founding to the late 1800’s. This is a one-time-only new park event that you will NOT want to miss! Located at our River Cabin area, just upstream from our new River Pavilion along River Road about 1 mile up-river from the RT36 Cooksburg Bridge.

In the Nineteenth Century, wooden pegs were used for construction because metal products were so expensive. Come see an actual blacksmith in action with this labor intensive artisan industry. Red-hot iron will sizzle in a bucket of water. Before Caledonia was a state park, it was a village ironworks owned by abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens. The Army of Northern Virginia burned Caledonia down on June 26, 1863 on the way to the small town of Gettysburg - a town that until then, few Americans had ever heard of.

Join a National Park Service ranger or volunteer for a ranger talk inside Fort Pulaski to learn answers to questions like these! Ranger talk programs last for approximately 30 minutes and cover a range of information about Fort Pulaski's history, as well as information about the natural and cultural heritage of Cockspur Island.

Learn about their journey from the Pennsylvania forests to the battlefields of Antietam, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg.
