What belongs to Historical Publications LLC

The editorial work is ours: the descriptions we write, the way listings are categorised and cross-referenced, the maps and page design, the site’s code, and the compilation itself — the selection and arrangement of what appears here, which is the part that took the work.

A single fact is free. The database is not. United States law protects an original compilation of facts even where each fact within it is uncopyrightable, and that protection is what stands behind the calendar.

What does not belong to us

That an event is happening, where, and on what date is a fact about the world. Anyone may state it. If you are an organiser, a museum, a newspaper or a rival calendar, you are free to say that a show takes place on a given weekend at a given hall — and you do not need our permission to do it.

Photographs and text submitted by event organisers remain the property of whoever made them. They appear here by permission of the submitter, and a submitter who wants something removed only has to ask.

What you may do without asking

• Link to any page on this site, including deep links to individual events.
• Quote a short passage — a sentence or two — with attribution to CivilWarEvents.com and a link back to the page it came from.
• Print a page for your own use, or to carry it to the event.
• Tell your members, readers or followers that an event listed here is happening.

What needs permission first

• Copying listings in bulk, by hand or by scraper, whether or not they are re-worded.
• Republishing the calendar or any substantial part of it, in print or online.
• Using our page design, code or graphics elsewhere.
• Any commercial use, including feeding the listings into another product or a subscription service.

Automated collection of the listings is not permitted without written permission. If you want the data for a legitimate purpose, write and ask — that conversation is usually shorter and more useful than a scraper.

Write to info@historicalpublicationsllc.com. Say what you want to use, where it will appear, and for how long. Permission for non-commercial and educational use is given readily and usually quickly.

If material of yours appears here without your permission, tell us and it comes down while we sort it out. Send the page address, identify the material, and say what your rights in it are. We would rather fix it than argue about it.
